About Spyderco Knives

Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser and initially focused on selling the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, a tool designed to make sharpening easy and effective.

In 1978, the company settled in Golden, Colorado, where it introduced its first folding knife, the C01 Worker, in 1981.

This knife revolutionized the industry by pioneering features like the round hole for one-handed opening, a pocket clip for easy carry, and a serrated edge for enhanced cutting performance.

These innovations defined the modern folding knife and set Spyderco apart as an industry leader.

Since then, Spyderco has grown steadily, earning a strong reputation for quality and innovation in the knife industry.

The company has built a global distribution network and established manufacturing partnerships in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China.

Over the years, Spyderco has developed an impressive portfolio of patents, trademarks, and industry awards, all while earning the trust and loyalty of knife users worldwide.

Spyderco’s product line has expanded to include a wide variety of knives, from everyday carry options to specialized tools for professionals.

Their knives are used globally for activities ranging from outdoor adventures to tactical applications and daily tasks.

Spyderco remains dedicated to continuously refining their designs and materials to meet the evolving needs of their customers.

The Spyderco Knife Hole

One of the most common questions asked by buyers new to Spyderco knives is, "Why the Round Hole?"

The Round Hole allows the blade of a folding knife to be swiftly and easily opened with only one hand.

This revolutionary feature was granted a U.S. utility patent in 1981 and literally helped define the form of the modern folding knife.

Unlike thumb studs, disks, and other one-hand-opening attachments, the knife hole offers a larger surface area for greater reliability. Additionally, it does not interfere with the cutting action of the blade.

An iconic symbol of the Spyderco brand is the Trademarked Round Hole, which also serves as a user-friendly alternative to a traditional nail nick in their two-hand-opening folders and a proud expression of our brand identity in our fixed-blade knives.

The Spyderco Knife Clip

Spyderco was the first company to equip a folding knife with a pocket clip.

This revolutionary feature was introduced in their very first folding knife design in 1981, which allows a folding knife to be carried at the top of the pocket, where it is easily accessible and does not interfere with access to other items in the pocket.

This brilliantly simple idea inspired our entire line of CLIP-IT knives. Also, it helped define the form of the modern folding knife.

Although it is now commonplace in most folding knife brands, it all started with Spyderco.
